  • Cup Drama for U14s

It was a dramatic morning of Cup football at York College on Saturday as the girls took on Brayton Belles in the 1st round of the League Cup.  The girls were 2-0 down with only 8 minutes left when Emily fired a wonderful shot into the bottom corner to give the girls hope, and then with only a minute left, Koré bundled home the equaliser to leave the match 2-2 at full time.  After 2 penalties scored and three missed for each team from the minimum 5 penalties, it came down to the 6th set, and Isabella scored, leaving the pressure on the Belles.  A fine save by Freya sent the team wild as they won the penalty shoot-out 3-2.  A first ever cup win for the team and a brilliant morning for the girls, coaches and spectators.

Team: Amelia, Emily, Robyn, Amy L, Abi, Elen, Freya, Koré, Rose, Isabella, Amy G

    Captain: Robyn

Cup Match: Won 2-2 (Emily, Koré) 3-2 on Penalties (Elen, Rose, Isabella)

Player of the Match: A fantastic performance from this player as she exemplified the spirit and commitment within the team.  She never stopped running and trying and gave 100% for the whole match. Her forward runs were powerful and threatening, she was strong in defence and she thoroughly deserved her first goal for the team. A superb display

    Match Report

The game started positively for the girls with excellent pressure on the Brayton goal.  Amy L had a good chance that was cleared off the line, and then a lovely short corner between Robyn and Isabella set up a chance for Amy L, but it was saved.  Brayton slowly started to get themselves into the game and their pacey forward line and wingers were starting to ask questions of Abi, Amelia, Rose and Emily who were playing as a back four.  Freya had to push the ball round the post from a low shot, and the girls were fortunate from some weak shooting by the visitors as they held on against mounting pressure.(for full match report click title)

  • Best Performance of the Season from U14s

A damp and drizzly York College was the venue for Saturday’s League match against Poppleton Tigers as the girls looked for revenge from a narrow defeat earlier in the season when BWR had to play almost all the game with 8 players after an early injury.  A sluggish start from the girls meant Freya had to produce an outstanding save, and then Robyn had to heroically clear off the line, within the first 10 seconds! BWR slowly got themselves into the game and it was a fantastically close and competitive match with both sides having chances and the play see-sawing back and forth.  The girls went ahead 10 mins before half-time as an Elen throw-in caused chaos in the Poppleton defence and Amy L was on hand to score as the ball was judged to have crossed the line before it was cleared. The game was delicately poised at 1-0 at half-time, but the girls came out and bossed the second half with an excellent performance.  The game was settled by an Elen strike half-way through the second half, but the girls never looked in danger of letting Poppleton back in the game and ran out worthy 2-0 winners.  The best performance of the season so far from the girls as they kept a clean sheet, played good football and beat a very good side.

Team: Amelia, Emily, Robyn, Amy L, Abi, Elen, Freya, Koré, Rose, Isabella, Amy G

    Captain: Elen

League Match: Won 2-0 (Amy L, Elen)

Player of the Match:  A superb performance from this player as she commanded the defence with skill and authority.  Strong tackles, committed clearances and a willingness to chase down every loose ball, made this an outstanding display from Rose. She also found time to put in some excellent in-swinging corners and set up the second goal for Elen.  Excellent!

    Match Report

Heavy overnight rain made for a soft, muddy pitch and constant drizzle only added to the gloom as the girls kicked off their match against Poppleton Tigers.  At the start of play the Tigers were only one point and one place above BWR in the table and so this was an important game for both sides.  The girls started very sluggishly, allowing a Poppleton forward to run through on goal in the first ten seconds.  Freya produced an outstanding save and was then helped out by heroics from Robyn as she blocked a shot on the line and cleared the ball away.  This was the wake-up call the girls needed and they worked hard to get into the game. • U14s Back To Winning Ways

After two postponements since Christmas, the girls finally got to play a game as they travelled to Kirk Deighton on Saturday.  An early goal from Elen settled the nerves as she danced through to score an excellent solo goal, but chances came and went with BWR unable to add to the score.  KDR were creating opportunities of their own and Freya had to be at her best to keep the girls ahead.  As the half
ended Amy L got a nasty knock on her ankle but bravely stayed on just long enough to fire a lovely shot from outside the area into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.  The second half saw the hosts get back into the match as they pulled a goal back early, but Emily quickly restored the two-goal cushion with a fine breakaway goal to make it 3-1.  BWR created a host of chances but just couldn’t kill the game off with KDR being a constant threat on the counter-attack.  The girls managed the game well in the final 10 minutes and ran out comfortable winners.  A tricky occasion after so many weeks without a game but the girls battled well and deserved the win.

Team: Amelia, Emily, Robyn, Amy L, Abi, Elen, Freya, Koré, Rose, Isabella, Amy G

    Captain: Freya

League Match: Won 3-1 (Elen, Amy L, Emily)

Player of the Match: An excellent performance from this player as she first showed tenacity and courage in defence and then pace and skill up front after taking over the striking duties when Amy got injured.  This players excellent tackling got the team out of some dangerous situations and she showed a cool head to take her goal.  A superb all-round display.

    Match Report

The game started with some early pressure from KDR but the girls quickly took control and the match settled into a pattern of BWR pressure with the hosts threatening on the counter attack.  An early shot from Amy L showed the attacking intentions of the girls and it went just wide of the post.  An early goal was needed to give the girls confidence after so long without a game, and Elen duly obliged, scoring her fifth goal in five games.  A superb interception by Rose in midfield fed the ball into Elen’s feet and she dribbled the ball round
two defenders and the keeper, and coolly slotted the ball home.  1-0 and no more than the girls deserved.  (for full match report click title)

  • U14s Hang On For Win

Thick fog was the main talking point as Wigginton Grasshoppers were the visitors to York College on Saturday. The game was dominated by BWR as they pressured the visitors goal, with Wigginton only a threat on the counter attack.  A fine opening goal from Elen, and a second by Amy, looked to have given the girls the score line they deserved, but Wigginton pulled one back to make it 2-1 before Amy scored from a Rose corner on the stroke of half-time, leaving it 3-1 at the break. The second half followed the same pattern as the first, with plenty of chances for BWR, and some threatening counter attacks from Wigginton, but more goals wouldn’t come for the girls.  A late goal by Wigginton made for a very tense final few minutes but the girls hung on for a deserved 3 points.

Team: Amelia, Rose, Emily, Isabella, Robyn, Amy, Abi, Elen, Ellie

    Captain: Ellie

League Match: Won 3-2 (Elen, Amy - 2)

Player of the Match: A strong defensive performance from this player who didn’t make a mistake for the whole game.  She was tough with her tackling and always in the right place at the right time.  This Player kept calm in possession and her distribution from the back was excellent.  A fine performance.

    Match Report

With thick fog surrounding the pitch like a wall, the game started with immediate pressure on the Wigginton goal.  Amy had a great early chance, from a through ball by Rose, which was saved by the Keeper, and then Rose put in a wonderful corner which Ellie volleyed just wide.  The chances kept coming as first Amy had a great run which the keeper managed to shovel round the post for a corner, and
then Amy had a fierce shot tipped over the bar. (for full match report click title)

  • U14s Leave It Late at (not quite) the Seaside

Fiercely cold sleet showers and a bitter icy wind greeted the girls for the first visit to Scarborough Ladies at their new home in Sherburn. BWR dominated the possession but couldn’t turn it into goals in an exciting match played in a friendly atmosphere. Isabella opened the scoring in the first half with a lovely volley just inside the area from a Robyn corner, but Scarborough equalised late in the half, totally against the run of play.  Chances came and went in the second half, and Scarborough were always a threat on the break, but with only a minute to go, Amy won a brave challenge in midfield, Elen passed the ball to Emily who beat two defenders and fired home.  A superb all-round display from the girls and they thoroughly deserved the win.

Team: Freya, Amelia, Rose, Emily, Isabella, Robyn, Kore, Amy, Abi, Elen

    Captain: Amy

League Match: Won 2-1 (Isabella, Emily)

Player of the Match: A superb defensive performance from this player.  Strong in the tackle, neat footwork and intelligent distribution.  She always seemed to be on hand to make the vital tackle and she used the ball well, always remaining calm under pressure.  An excellent display.

    Match Report

The girls kicked off playing against the wind in the first half and this initially invited some pressure from the home side.  It didn’t last long as the girls started a wave of attacks on the Scarborough goal.  A Robyn cross from the left just couldn’t find a BWR touch, and this set a trend for the match, with some lovely crosses being fired in, but bad luck and good defending stopping the girls every time. • U14s Tame the Tigers

It was a rewarding trip to far flung Goole on Saturday as the girls notched up their first win of the season. A lovely finish by Robyn early in the second half gave the girls a deserved 1-0 win against a competitive and physical Tigers side.  Superb performances throughout the team showed the progress the girls are making, and a first clean sheet of the season was the icing on the cake for an excellent all-round

Team: Freya, Amelia, Rose, Emily, Isabella, Annie, Ellie, Robyn, Kore

    Captain: Isabella

    League Match: Won 1-0 (Robyn

Player of the Match: A superb exhibition of wing play from this player as she worked her socks off up and down the left wing.  She never failed to track back and help out in defence and she looked dangerous every time she went forward.  Her close control was excellent and a superb performance was topped off by the winning goal.

    Match Report

A strong wind made this a game of two halves, and it was BWR who kicked off against the wind in the first half.  Some early pressure from Goole found Freya in great form.  Her handling was excellent and she commanded her area with authority, calling for the ball well and making good decisions about coming off her line to gather the ball.  The defence were superb with Amelia and Rose making good strong tackles in the centre, and Emily using her pace and awareness to stop attacks from breaking through the defensive shield.  After the early pressure, BWR started to create some chances and it was a lovely through ball from Emily which sent Isabella through on goal but her effort was palmed away by the Keeper.

Purple is future vision and identity

Over the years the club has worn many colours ranging from red, orange, black,
purple and many more.  So it was decided that with the club taking major strides with the intake of players and the Moor Lane project the club should be united in one colour.  Each age group, boys and girls would cast one vote per team.  The deadline for voting was January 31st 2014 with the colours of purple and red/black pitted against each other.  With 7 votes to 3 purple was the outright winner.  This means all future kit purchases will be in purple, a unique colour to the York leagues but a colour that has been fondly adopted by the village of Bishopthorpe.  More will be discussed at the clubs AGM in February.
